Common Questions

WHERE’S MY FAMILY, FRIEND AND/OR CLIENT?

DETERMINING THE FACILITY YOUR LOVED ONE IS IN:

First try the local precinct of arrest. If you are family, you may be able to get info on whether s/he is being held there or has moved to Remand. It is important to distinguish which remand the prisoner is in – MSP or Golden Grove. If you are not getting anywhere, try the administrative offices at 868-623-7070.

WHO CAN VISIT?

  • Unless a prisoner requests that you not visit them, any adult can visit REMAND without a pre-approved visitor form on the days and times based on inmate status, how many visits they have already had and if you meet the dress code. To visit anyone other than the remanded (convicted, condemned and prohibited) the inmate must request a visitor form be sent to you via mail and you must have the form before visiting.
  • If the visitor is 16 – 17 you must request a special visit with the Commissioner. Although the policy allows for a visit, it has to be pre-approved.
  • Children are only allowed on designated dates announced by the prison.

FREQUENCY, DAYS & HOURS OF VISITS

FREQUENCY, DAYS & HOURS ARE BASED ON INMATE STATUS AND NOT THE FACILITY

  • The visit with your loved one is 15 minutes (longer for convicted) – and this time flies by its like 5 minutes so check to make sure the bags you brought and bought are all accounted for as quickly as possible.
  • Visitors are taken from the visitor area where you register in small groups to the site where commissary and the actual visit takes place. You will be waiting in the visitor area until your number is called, visit registered and placed on a bus – 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.
  • Get to MSP by 5:30am – there is a list and your number depends on the time of arrival. 1st bus leaves a little after 8am and every hour or so there after. The later you go, the less stock in Commissary and the less patience in general everyone has so keep that in mind. TIP: when you arrive early, ask who has the list and add your inmate’s name – mind the number s/he is on the list
  • Get to Golden Grove by 4am to get #20 in line. Keep in mind you go in groups of about 10-12 – which could cover 8 – 10 inmates at a time. Get there by 5:30am and you might get #30 chip. Instead of a bus, you literally walk across the street to start the search and commissary process. TIP: when you arrive, be sure to walk across to the gate and ask for your number. It will come on a small wooden chip.
